What is phone coaching?
In addition to individual therapy, if the client is engaged in adherent DBT (see blog post titled,” ), the therapist will provide phone coaching outside of the sessions. The client can call/text the therapist at any time after they have attempted 3 skills they have learned in group. The therapist will respond during the hours of 8am-8pm to provide coaching on how to use the skills in an effective manor.
This approach has shown to help the client apply the skills outside of therapy. The goal of DBT is to not be in therapy forever. The therapist job is to teach the skills so the client can eventually use the skills on their own and apply them to relevant contexts.
